Nominal wage up 15 per cent

PA Wellington The nominal weekly wage rates index, rose by 15.4 per cent in the year ended March 31, 1977, according to the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). The index shows the movement in adult male wage and salary rates fixed by or within the jurisdiction of the Industrial Commission and minimum rates which are generally mandatory rates, fixed by other authorities. The index rose by 10.6 per cent in the year ended March 31, 1976, and 17.1 per cent in the preceding 12 months. Mr Harris said yesterday that the index reflected changes in ordinary time weekly rates either fixed by the Industrial Commission or confirmed by the commission after agreement between the parties or prescribed by other authorities. Historically, the index had, over longer periods, been a good measure of the movement in actual wage rates for adult males and this, rather than measuring

actual rates, had been its main use. “In shorter periods of considerable movement in wage levels, the index is a less authoritative measure of movements in actual wage rates,” Mr Harris said.
