Socialism

Sir, —After the 1938 General Election the • Labour Party denied they were socialists and have done so ever since. Now some wish to be known by this title, to the embarrassment of their leader. For Mr Rowling to say that socialism is difficult to define is ridiculous; any good dictionary will give a simple meaning for it. His comment that nobody wants it is, of course, his opinion, but his theory that they are democratic socialists is simply eyewash. Hitler said that his party was along those lines, and we know how democratic he was. Mr Rowling might be agreeably surprised if he was to give a straightforward answer just this once — just a simple yes or no as to where Labour stands.—Yours, etc., J. C. KING. May 22, 1977.
