C.I.A. and N.Z.
Sir, — I note with some interest our Prime Minister’s lack of concern at the C.I.A. presence In New Zealand. Would the C.I.A. really tell him if it was up to anything which went beyond liaison? I am sure they did not tell the Prime Ministers of Australia or Chile. And does our 5.1.5., in fact, constantly check (as best it can) whether or not there are any C.I.A. "operations” in New’ Zealand in the way that it obviously does in ‘he case of Russia. And, anyway, w’hat are the dreadful things the Russians are doing covertly in New Zealand w’hich our Prime Minister axiomatically assumes go without saying? On the question of former C.I.A. people opening their mouths: surely there are limits to what a person can (and should) keep to themselves. — Yours, etc., G. C. SUGGATE. May 23, 1977.
