Foreign fishing
Sir. — At first it amused me to read a report that the fisheries patrol vessel. P"4kaki had stopped a Timai — based fishing trawler lor
fishing in restricted waters off Lyttelton. Then, after some thought, I became annoyed to think that for years and years Japanese, Russian, Taiwanese and Korean and heaven-knows-what-other countries’ fishing vessels have been poaching our waters completely unworried about being caught. Indeed, when a Taiwanese fishing boat was apprehended last year, it was sent home with the Government’s blessing, free fruit and food. Also just last week a Russian trawler was actually seen fishing inside restricted waters, and what has been done about this? Precisely nothing, as usual. — Yours, etc.,
J. S. INKSTER February 21, 1977.
