Infant mortality

Sir, — In reply to D, Moen’s concern about the infant mortality statistics, certainly the key word in his letter is the word “inconvenience.” Certain women in the community find it inconvenient to refrain from drinking, smoking and taking drugs during pregnancy. Quite a number find it inconvenient to attend antenatal classes which are available free of charge, and later there is the inconvenience of taking their children to be immunised, even though the immunisation and check-ups are free. Only recently there was a diphtheria scare in the city. When, for the responsible parent, is it too inconvenient to take a sick child for medical care? Is it any wonder that the infant mortality rate is high? — Yours, etc., A. CAIRNS. February 18, 1977.
