Tennis ranks upset again
The ranking scene in Canterbury tennis became more complicated with the defeat of the former No. 1 player, Warren Edgecumbe (Elmwood), by Ralph Webster (United) in the latest round of promotion-relegation matches at Wilding Park. Webster, who had previously lost to Edgecumbe in an inter-club match, eased ahead of his rival in a tie-breaker to decide the third set. Leading players have had such topsy-turvy results this season that it is hard to determine just who is the no. 1 player at present. Edgecumbe, who started the season as the top man, subsequently lost to Peter Hampton, who, in turn, was beaten by Martin Epstein. Then, in inter-club matches, Epstein was convincingly beaten by Barry Knight. But in the latest series of ranking matches, Epstein beat Alan Croad — previously a clearcut winner over Edgecumbe at inter-club level. The Canterbury selectors intend to revise the ranking ladder next week. But in the light of the dog-eat-dog results which the present sea-
son has produced, it se that the selectors will be . able to please everybody. Other notable wins in th latest round of ranking ma ches were by Bill Thom - one of the selectors — agains Jim Martin, Barry Find against Derek McKay, anc Michael O’Flaherty agains David Howarth, with the los of only two games.
