Maoris and aid
Sir, — The “aid” Mr Harvey Foss refers to was an agreement entered into by the N.Z. Government to placate the Maoris for its failure to uphold and honour the terms of the Ngai Tahu Deed namely, “The reservation of Maori pa sites, cultivation and burial grounds” — a conservative estimate of some 150 acres in the Christchurch city area alone. My elders point out that this aid ended as recently as 1939 and that there were strings attached, any pupil who spoke Maori w r as severely punished. I can also assure Mr Foss that very few, if any, Maoris are disappointed by the cancellation of the proposed tour of South Africa. We are not so stupid that we can’t see it as a ruse to prop up a so-called new sports system in South Africa which fools nobody, except perhaps those whose thinking is still firmly entrenched in the 19305. — Yours, etc., R. NIHONIHO. Chairman, Otautahi Maori Committee. December 7, 1976.
