Integrated team ‘would not help’

PA Timaru An integrated rugby team from South Africa New Zealand would not help’ the situation of the Coloureds and blacks in South Africa, according to the All Black coach, Mr J. J. Stewart. Mr Stewart was the guest speaker at the annual dinner and prize-giving of the Geraldine Rugby Football Club on Saturday night. He said that while South Africa could “jack up” a mixed team to tour this country — therefore satisfying demands of H.A.R.T. and C.A.R.E. — as soon as the team got back to Johannesburg, the whites and Coloureds would be driven home in separate taxis to separate areas of the city. “I do not see any hope of players from South Africa playing in New Zealand until they get integrated sport, but I do not believe truly integrated sport can come until the South African society is integrated.” Mr Stewart said that the All Blacks would not return to South Africa until South Africa had a team accepted for a four in New Zealand.
