Paul Jesson dominant

The power of Paul Jesson had some shivering track cyclists wishing they were at home last evening, instead of at Denton Park.

Jesson teamed with the top I sprinter. Jacob Schriek, to domI Inate the season’s first madison. [Though there were two teams I not caught by this pair, they were distant in the minor placings. Schriek was in for most of the sprints—though winning only one his team was second in most of the others—and Jesson was always on hand to turn on the power. Earlier, Jesson had led away Schriek and Steve Candy in a 6000 m breakaway that shattered the field racing for the Four Square Cup. Jesson took very strong laps, Candy kept things rolling very nicely, but it was Schriek. the sprinter, who retained the cup. Apart from the back-markers, quite the best-performed amateur was. Royce Dawson. One of the hardest workers of the middle marks, Dawson’s industry and willingness to attack brought him victories in the 1600 m and 3200 m handicap races. But in the latter. Dawson had to withstand a blazing final 250 m from Kim Reid, again after Jesson had worked over the backmarkers.

With the novices in the national championships all not riding. the A grade ranks were sorely decimated. This left Gavin Sutherland very dominant, and he teamed well with Ricky Schaapveld to win the 30-lap madison.

The only serious opposition came from the pairings of Jeremy Carroll and Steve Duder, and Bevan Gyde with Vaughan Harvey. They had their own private battle for second, with the result hanging on the final sprint won bv Carroll. Results: AMATEUR Scratch.—Open 8000 m, Four Square Cup: J. Schriek 1. P. A. Jesson 2 S.
