Air pistol pointed at police car
An 18-year-old youth who pointed an imitation pistol 1 at a police car travelling down Durham Street on Sunday was fined $75 when he appeared before Mr F. G. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Gerrard Mark Saxon, a joiner, was convicted after pleading guilty to a charge of presenting a cap pistol at Derek Kirk which, in the circumstances, was likely to lead him to believe it was a firearm. Sergeant D. Gibson told the Court that at 2.40 a.m. on October 17 the defendant and a friend crossed over Durham Street. As they reached the footpath on the other side of the street a car horn sounded. The defendant swung round pulling a cap pistol from his pocket and pointed it at a uniformed policeman driving down Durham Street. Thinking it was real, the policeman swerved his cat and narrowly avoided, an accident. When questioned by the police about the incident, Saxon said “he had just been having a bit of fun.”
