Maori seats
Sir, —Mr Ben Couch is reported as saying that for Maori seats to remain permanently there would have to be seats also for Islanders, Chinese, Dalmations, etc. This does not follow. These latter elected to come to New Zealand and join the pakeha society and therefore have no special standing. The Maoris had their country taken over by the pakeha and are, therefore, in a quite different position though one which does not necessarily entitle them to special consideration if they are to be regarded as the conquered party. If Maori seats are to go, however, it assumes assimilation of the Maori people into the pakeha society and the adoption of the ways of pakeha society and its values by the Maori people. I thought that this was not in line with current thought. Mr Ben Couch is a National M.P. and a partMaori.—Yours, etc., G. C. SUGGATE. October 14, 1976.
