Policy change on over stayers?

NZPA staff corres. Suva

The Prime Minister of Western Samoa, Tupuola Efl, has welcomed New Zealand’s decision to revise plans to deport Samoan overstayers. After talks in Suva with the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) Tupuola Efi told reporters he was “very happy” with the outcome. "From what I can see Mr Muldoon was genuinely trying to seek a solution and I would imagine that he as much as we would like to get this out of the way, and the sooner the better,” he said. While details have still to be worked out, Mr Muldoon’s broad proposal was to extend the period over which overstayers would be deported—perhaps to about a year.

Mr Muldoon had similar talks with the Tongan Prime Minister, Prince Tuipele’hake. and said later New Zealand

was now well aware of the problems facing both island states over the return of overstayers. “New Zealand had to try to be fair to everyone concerned,” he said. He had assured both island leaders that no precipitous action would be taken on the return of overstayers. “We are going to try and work out something . . . but I don’t know what it is,” Mr Muldoon said.
