Rural life

Sir, — : With reference, to your report of September 10 covering the Rural Development Conference at Lincoln College. 1 wish to correct a term of expression you have attributed to me. During informal discussion on the final morning of the conference when the subject of social and welfare services in rural areas was raised I made several points, finally stating that there was a section of the community for whom life in the country was difficult, and that their departure was our loss. I collectively ' described this section as, single women and named them as follows, single women, the widow and the young widow, the solo mother, the divorced woman and her family. I did

not use the term divorcee. — Yours, etc., HEATHER LITTLE. September 16, 1976. [Our reporter comments: "I regret it if I have done Mrs Little an injustice, but reference to my notes and to our report of the conference seems to indicate that the general tenor of her remarks about two groups was conveyed, if not in one case with quite the detail she would have wished.”]
