Arthur’s Pass road plan ‘killed’

It would cost $750,000 to make the proposed highway deviation through Arthur’s Pass township, the National Roads Board was told as it passed through. , “And that’s enough to kill it in the meantime,” said Mr J. G. Sullivan, district highways engineer for the Ministry of Works and Development.

Mr Sullivan said the Ministry’s proposal to widen the existing highway to one chain and a half drew opposition from residents, but the extra width was needed in snow conditions, and for parking and foot traffic. It was suggested that the highway be diverted to the bank of the Bealey River, but, said Mr Sullivan, this would mean that it would be in a riverbed. The Ministry could not go along with that.
