Old bodies unearthed

PA Nelson Human remains were uncovered last week during excavation at a subdivision being developed at Pohara Beach, near Takaka. It is believed that the skeletons of three white persons and part of a coffin were unearthed. Work halted on the project while an exhumation order was sought. The bones were reinterred at Rotaitai Cemetery on Saturday, after an officer of the Health Department at Nelson had inspected them. The Golden Bay County Council has no records of burial plots in the locality, which is about a mile north of Clifton Cemetery, the earliest public graveyard in the area.
