Addington Market Cattle values rise; lambs fully firm

Prime cattle had their best •ale of the winter at the Addington Market yesterday. This was brought about largely bv a much •mailer yarding >405 head), and also to more competition. After. a weak opening, tiie prime lamb market became fully firm, the best of the carding fetching $l7 Ewes with fair pelts continued to sell steadilv in the prime sheep section, but ewes, just off •hears, were often discounted. Ewes with lambs at foot prosided one of the main talking points in the store sheep section. The best of them fetched •7 in al; counted, which, on the price of ewes still to lamb, •eerred a very satisfactory sale. Prime sheep had a variable •ale. The carding was 790 com-pa-ed with 930 last week, and consisted mainly of ewes. Ewes with several months’ growth of wool had a firm sale, but the ewes shorn just three eeks were discounted on recent rates It appeared that for killing purposes at the city abattoirs, ewes with a minimum of four to six weeks* growth of wool are much more acceptable. Yesterday the principal buyer for the retail trade was unable to bid on ewes shorn the minimum of three weeks. Very few wethers were forward. and those on offer were mainly in very' small lots. The market for them wa* In line with recent rates. Values were.— Best young wethers, fair pelts, to $l7. Medium wethers. $12.50 to $l4. Four-tooth wethers, $10.50 to $13.10Older wethers, $8.30 to $ll. Two-tooth ewes, to $13.10. Adult ewes, fair pelts. $8 to Medium ewes. $7.40 to $7.80. Store sheep The feature of this week’s store sheep sale was the appearance of the first of the season’s ewes with lambs at. foot. A pen of well-wooiled Romneys, with Poll Dorset-cross lambs at foot, were sold at $7.40, and a small lot of Romneys, with 150 per cent of lambs, at $6.65 all counted. Some followers of the market thought they were well sold; others felt there were still good margins left for the buyers. Compared with prices being paid for ewes, due to lamb, they appeared to have fetched good money. In-lamb ewes had only an average sale. The yarding of about 500 head ranged from good quality to rather plain. Some one-shear Romneys fetched top price of $13.60. Goodaverage ewes, not far from lambing, ranged from $9 to $11.50, and plain down to $7.50. The store lamb yarding, which drew an entry of 400 to 500 head, was one of the tidiest of the winter Romney wether Jambs made up most of the entrv, and the\ sold at $8 50 to $11,20. Carry-over lambs ranged from $6 to $B. Several days of good, sunny weather, had clearly helped the tone of the market, for la.st week’s decline of SI a head was recovered.

Sales of store sheep included:— Breeding ewes: R. B. Paton (Ellesmere), 54 Corriedales, due mid-August to Down rams, at $10.50: K. W. Rushton (Rakaiai, 109 one-shear Romneys, due to Down rams, at $13.60; B. Page (Greenpark). 14 Romney ewes, with 19 lambs at foot, at $6.55; A. J. L. Button (Ohoka), 150 oneyear Border-Romney ewes, due August, at $11.50. Prime cattle With an entry of only 405 head, compared with 608 last week, the prime cattle yarding was the second smallest of the winter. While it included a useful selection of good quality medium-weight cattle, there were more young very average lightweight steers on hand. From the early stages of the market, values were stronger all round. Good steers were a steady $5 to $7 stronger, and heifers improved by $4 to $5. However, there was a marked lift in the concluding stages, steers being $lO to $l2 ahead of opening rates, and heifers stronger by S 8 to SlO. Prime cows probably had their best sale of the year. They improved by $5 to $7 in the early stages arid at the close of the sale were a full $lO stronger.

I This situation, however, will not continue, if 150 arrive at the yards next week. During the main part of the ‘sale, good heavy steer beef sold at $25 per 1001 b (55c a kg), medium-weight at $22 (59.5 c with light-weight to $2B <6l.scj; heifer beef at S2l to $23 (46c to 50.5ci; and cow beef at $l7 to $l9 (37 c to 42c). Values were: — Extra-heavy steers, $204. Prime heavy, $175 to SlB5. Medium steers, $155 to $l7O. Light steers, $135 to $l5O. Other steers, down to $l2O. Top-weight heifers, to $135. Medium heifers. $lOO to $llO. Light heifers, $BO to $95. Butchers’ cows, to 5127. Medium cows, S9O to $9B Other cows, $65 to $BO. Leading sales of prime cattle included: — Steers: J. J. and J. F. Dairy cattle There was no strength in the dairy cattle market. The sale drew an offering of 12 head, most of them Friesian heifers. Under solely local competition, Ute best sold to $ll2, with average at $BO to $96, and plain dow n to $5O. Store cattle Store cattle values reflected the improved market for prime beef. The yarding of 200 head was mixed, but it included a line of steers which had a very good sale. Included were Hereford-Friesian cross steers at $l2l and the best of some Angus at $ll4. Mated Hereford cows, in fairly hard condition, sold at $52.50 to SfiO. and small, plain HerefordS at $39. Steer calves, or rising yearlings, ranged from $34 to $4O. The sale quotation of store cattle was:— J. J. Minehan (Rolleston), 24 Hereford-cross steers at $95 to $l2l, 30 Angus steers at $B6 to $ll4.

A ealers Like the prime cattle market, the veal sale was very sound. Compared with last week, values were $4 to $5 stronger, and on the small selection of good quality cattle, the lift was greater. The yarding of 135 was below requirements. Best vealers sold to $95.50. and there were frequent sales at $75 to $B2, with the smaller end of the yarding down to $6O. On dressed weight, much of rhe veal was fetching $26 to $27 per 1001 b. Fat pigs Fat pigs were firm on last week’s rates. The yarding was of medium size, and of very mixed quality. Good quality pigs of all types sold well. A large yarding of choppers met weak inquiry, and values were a regular $lO a head easier, and sometimes more. Values were:— Light porkers, to $45. Medium porkers, $46 to $52. Heavy’ porkers and light baconers, $53 to $6l. Medium baeoners, $61.50 to $64. Extra-heavy pigs, to $BO. Choppers, to $55. Store pig# Large stores made the bulk of a iarge yarding of store pigs. With outside competition, however, the sale remained firm.

A very small offering of breeding stock came forward, and there were no quotable sales. Values were:— Small weaners, $2l to $25. Good weaners, to $29. Slips, $2B to $32. Medium stores, $34 to $3B, Large stores, to $42.25.
