Disabled sportsman dies aged 54

A Canterbury’ paraplegic sportsman, Mr Walter Reginald Clough, died at his Richmond. Christchurch, home on Friday. He was 54. Mr Clough raised more than SISOO for the 1974 Commonwealth Games fund when he swam 50 lengths of the Wharenui Swimming Pool in December, 1971. In October of last year he swam non-stop for eight hours, covering 10,000 metres, in the Queen Elizabeth II Park swimming pool. His effort raised $2500 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Canterbury’ Paraplegic Association. Mr Clough was a keen cyclist in his younger days, before being stricken with multiple sclerosis. But he was not daunted by his disability. He maintained a keen interest in many sports, including rugby, cricket, soccer, and indoor bowls. He appeared on television last February to promote a sponsored relay run from

Blenheim to Christchurch, organised by the Linwood Rugby Football Club and the Paraplegics Association. He also participated in the indoor bowls at the national paraplegic games at Bumham at Easter. i He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
