More use of airport needed

The vast cost of developing airport facilities was the factor which most impressed Mr M. R. Carter when he attended a conference of airport authorities in Singapore last week. Christchurch had been extremely fortunate to develop its airport at such reasonable cost, but now needed an increase in international traffic to use it to its best advantage, said Mr Carter, the chairman of the City Council public utilities committee. Commenting on the decision of Singapore Airlines to begin excursion flights into Auckland on May 1, Mr Carter said it would generate much more tourism from the East, particularly from Japan. Singapore Airlines was an aggressive promoter, he said, but he was disappointed that the discussions he had held with it about a year ago had not led to direct flights into Christchurch. Mr Carter was critical of what he thought were the high fares carriers were charging, especially for Tasman flights.
