Entry of North Koreans

Sir, — In today’s paper you quote Mr Wolfgang Rosenberg, secretary of the New Zealand-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Society, to the effect that New Zealand cannot contribute to the relaxation of international tensions by cutting itself off from information (sic!) from North Korea. In your editorial of April 8, you say that these supporters of North Korea must now “come out in favour of a free exchange of people.” In the latter context, the w’ord “free” must mean the voluntary’, uncontrolled, non-selective right and ability to travel. “Information” must mean facts and opinions freely obtained, through free access to all sources of information and not just controlled sources. Not until these criteria are met need we feel any compunction in denying the marionettes of a cruel dictatorship entry into our society, ill-prepared to protect itself against their undermining. Under such circumstances, our priceless freedom becomes the totalitarian’s tool. — Yours, etc., S. WESTERMANN. April 10, 1976.
