Turner 115 gives Otago good start

(Neto Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Glenn Turner won a critical toss in the Shell series cricket match against Northern Districts at Carisbrook yesterday, and then showed his gratitude in positive fashion by stroking a cultured 115, to pilot Otago to a commanding position after the first day of play.

With the pitch taking considerable turn, Otago’s first innings total of 319 for eight wickets declared could ■veil carry inflated value when the game continues today.

I It was a most satisfactory i day for Otago, which gained [five batting bonus points and . restricted Northern to one. There was elation in the Otago camp when Turner won the toss from his Worcestershire county teammate. John Parker, and it swelled as Turner, lan Rutherford, and Robert Anderson

all played accomplished innings, to take Otago to the handsome score of 260 for four wickets at tea. But the last session, apart from a fluent 36 from Keith Campbell, who played his first authoritative innings of the series, belonged to Richard Collinge, the giant leftarmed Northern paceman. On a wicket completely unsympathetic to quick bowling, he knocked over the stumps of Campbell, Warren Lees, and Don McKechnie, to finish with the grand analysis of five for 30 from 18 overs.

Collinge bowled Campbell and Don McKechnie with consecutive balls and Lyn McAlevey made his entry into first-class cricket with the task of averting the hattrick.

He edged a single to third man to do so, but Brian McKechnie was leg before to the next ball to give Collinge three wickets in four balls.

Otago batted 382 minutes and 84 overs for its runs, but Northern, which survived the last 25 minutes before stumps to be 13 without loss, could have a battle on its hands today to combat the threepronged spin attack of Peter Petherick. Don McKechnie, and McAlevey. Otago owed its most respectable total mainly to the first two partnerships.
