Coney out with ’flu
f.TZ. Pr««* Associations WELLINGTON. Influenza has ruled out the Wellington runmachine, Jeremy Coney, from the imoortant Shell series cricket match against Canterbury at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, starting today. Coney, Wellington's most successful batsman to date In the series, was ordered to bed on Wednesday.
Having already scored 372 runs in the series at an average of 62, Coney has still not recovered from the virus that affected him in Auckland. “Jeremy’s been crook for over a week,” said Mr Keith Smith, convenor of the Wellington selection panel. “He’s running a high fever, and feels so lethargic just walking around.”
Wellington had named 13 players for the Canterbury game. Mr Smith said that in spite of Coney’s absence, another player would not be added. This might be a gamble, because there is still some doubt over the fitness of right-arm pace bowler, Mike Coles, who badly split the top joint of his fore-finger on the right hand, against Auckland last week-end.
