Parun into semi-final

(V2. Press Associatuin) AUCKLAND.

Onny Parun, the NewZealand lawn tennis champion, again successfully walked the tightrope at the Stanley Street courts yesterday. Parun won his quarterfinal of the men’s singles in the Benson and Hedges Open against the tenacious Australian, Colin Dibley, and will now meet an old friend of the circuit. Ray Moore, of South Africa, in the top half of the draw. In the bottom section, Brian Fairlie. the New Zealand Davis Cup team-mate of Parun, beat Bob Carmichael, of Australia, a former winner of this event. Followers of Parun have been sitting on the edge of their seats for the past few days, for the defending champion has taken them through five tie-breaker sets out of the eight he has played in winning his three matches. But the day did not belong entirely to the two New Zealanders.

Earlier, Ray Ruffels, who will meet Fai'rlie in the bottom half of the draw, gave an extremely tidy display in putting out R. Giltinan, a fellow Australian, in four sets. But perhaps even more impressive was the effort of the English girl. Miss Sue Barker. She tore the redoubtable Australian, Mrs Judy Dalton’s game apart with a

forehand which cannoned away to all parts of the court for some most spectacular winners.

The Parun-Dibley match, interrupted for an hour, was the most eventful one of the day. In the fourth set, Dibley was upset over a centre-line service, which was called “fault” and remained so despite the Australian’s strong questioning of the decision. As it happened Dibley lost his service here, and that virtually wrapped up the match. Scores: —
