Hipwell out of Wallabies

The Australian Rugby : Union captain, John Hip-i well, has had a cartilege removed from his left knee arid will take no further part in I the Wallaby'tour of Britain.

Hipwell had been examined by surgeons in London and they recommended the operation. He was reported in satisfactory condition in hospital this week, and is expected to be discharged on j Saturdav.

Hipwell injured the knee at Gosforth on November 22. With less than a month of the tour remaining, he has [no chance of getting back on [to the field and his absence will place a heavy strain on the reserve halfback. Rod Hauser. Junior tennis.—Graeme Merchant (West Coast) knocked out the only seeded player to fall in the boys under 17 singles at the Bay of Plenty open age junior ‘ tennis tournament in Tauranga. Top seed in the under 15 singles. David Mahy, of Tauranga. also fell to unseeded player. Steven Chambers, of Hokitika, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Hockey.—Spain has beaten West Germany. 2-1, to take third place in the Rene Frank international field hockey tournament.
