Greyhound record falls

One of the country 's best grey hound pups last year. Hobbs Galore, returned to racing after an absence of six months with a magnificent win in the first novice event at the Christchurch club s equalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening.

Hobbs Galore, a lightly coloured bitch by Old Hobbs from Trudy Galore, boasts nothing in size, but has the vita! qualities of speed and stamina.

The Rangiora-tramed bitch has always appreciated the irv>ide box. She drew that last evening and bounced out brilliantly. The race quickly developed into a procession as Hobb’s Galore streaked around the 540 m to win by 15 lengths and create a track record for the distance of 32.6. This was o.2sec faster than Rise and Shine recorded when she won the New Zealand championship at the park at the last meeting. The brilliant win thrilled the dog’s trainer, Bill Gill, and compensated for his disappointment at having to miss a start at the national meeting when his charge came into season Her next mission will be the Canterbury Futurity Stakes in which she will be a dominating favourite.

After the success of Hobb’s Galore. Gill must have had high hopes of rounding off a fine double when he had the favourite for the feature race—the Merv Gibson open distance—in Beni Ulid.

Beni Ulid. a strong animal by Cardigan Moss, had qualified in fastest time and had a third placing in the New Zealand championship to recommend him.

But this race. too. became a one-dog affair Miss Print, raced by two Christchurch journalists. Brian Cowley and Stan Rayner, made one of her best beginnings and never looked like being headed. She won by 10 lengths in the good time of 48.5 sec for the 750 m.

Swell Time ran a typically honest race for second and to, cap off a good result for the bitches. Smokey Eyes came strongly for third. Beni Ulid got too far out of his ground early to be a threat and he could not. improve on fifth.

Red Shadow, a litter brother to Miss Print, made an auspicious debut by fighting strongly to win the second
