Sewage on beach

A blockage in the Akaroa sewage-treatment plant [caused it to overflow, discharging raw faeces which drifted on to Akaroa’s bathing beach. The Health Department’s supervising inspector (Mr C. H. Edwards) said he had not been able to discuss the disi charge with the County EnIgineer (Mr K. A. Paulin), as ■he was away on holiday; but the blockage had been cleared and the plant was working satisfactorily. Mr Edwards said that the plant was a typical one for smaller communities. It discharged into the sea at Red House Bay, a mile south of the town, and the raw sewage from the blockage overflow would have been taken to the beach by the tide. No complaint had been received by the department, he said. This sort of emergency was fairly rare. The county chairman (Mr T. J. Brocherie) said he had not been told of the breakdown, but it was likely that the plant had become overloaded by the holiday influx' of visitors.
