Tyre men too hot to work
Workers at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company’s Papanui factory walked off the 3.30 p.m. shift yesterday in protest against the high temperature in the curing room.
A similar stoppage occurred on December 9. The Rubber Workers’ Union branch secretary (Mr R. A. Brott) said the heat problem had persisted for years, despite fans in the curing room. The curing-room temperature had been about 39deg (lOOdeg F) in the afternoon, | and that type of heat usually j persisted into the evening ■ hours. Mr Brott said the union had suggested that curingroom workers be allowed to work half an hour in the room and half an hour out when temperatures were high.
“They are not very pleasan working conditions,” he said. “If it is that hot, you naturally move away from it.” Mr Brott said the company had spent thousands of dollars on fans, but they were not effective. He had been delivering a formal notice of why the last stoppage had occurred, and suggestions to the management, when the afternoon shift left the job. Normal work would begin again at 11.30 p.m. on Sunday.
