Man dies, child hurt in fire
(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Dec. 19. 1 A 75-year-old man died, 1 and his three-year-old granddaughter is believed ' to have been seriously injured in a fire in an old Whangarei house. He was Edward Dent, aged 75. He was looking after his grandchildren Marie Monk, aged three, and her brother George, aged seven, while his wife, Helen, and the children’s mother, Mrs Mary Monk, were shopping. It is not known how the fire began, but neighbours alerted the fire brigade about 4 p.m. The house was ablaze by the time the fire brigade arrived. George had already been taken from the house by a neighbour, but it was about another half an hour before firemen managed to get Marie out. The fire was eventually brought under control about 6 p.m., when Mr Dent’s body was removed.
