POLICE: “CALL US IN”
i (N.Z. Press Association* WELLINGTON. Dec. 9. Retailers must hand over shoplifters to the police, the crime prevention . ; officer for Wellington, ( Detective Sergeant M. ( ] Sears, said today. ( Too many shop owners (detected shoplifters, then took back the stolen property and gave the offender a “second chance,” he said. This was very common before Christmas when the number of school-age shoplifters soared. “That kid goes away and thinks he has beaten the system. He goes back and tells the whole school. We ; would like the police to be; contacted every time so that' the youth-aid section can be ; brought in.” Detective Sergeant Sears said. Not everyone caught would' 'be prosecuted. The police' iwere free to use discretion' [in certain cases, he said.
