Enrolment law seen as 'a joke’
The General Election enrolment law was a joke, according to the Political Renewal Group, of Christchurch. Although it was a legal duty to enrol, it was still Government policy not to prosecute those who did not — even though the penalties for failing to enrol were raised by an Electoral Act amendment in August. If the enrolment law was not to be enforced, it seemed strange that it was made tougher, the Political Renewal Group said. The group called on Government departments to publicise facts about enrolment totals, with estimates of the number of eligible voters who did not enrol. Elector turn-out statistics should incude those who fail to comply with the Electoral Act.
