New oyster impresses
(N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA
Though some fear a threat from the giant Japanese oyi ster which is colonising harbours on the east coast of Northland, the Minister of Lands (Mr Rata) is impressed with its potential. “I was served with half a dozen on Friday, and I had difficulty in getting through them because of their size, but they seemed to me to be excellent in colour, flavour, and texture,” he said.
The oysters first appeared about three years ago. Their origin is unexplained, though it is thought to be connected with the presence then of Japanese fishing vessels close to shore.
