Benefits for women
Sir, —■ The letters concerning benefits for women are very much to the point. Under the present administration a superannuitant’s widow is in a- much worse position than a pensioner as regards concessions and other handouts. Similarly a superannuitant’s wife who is under 65 years is severely handicapped in many cases. Stretching the housekeeping allowance means limiting bus trips to a bare minimum, as fares are prohibitive but one must take advantage of sales to obtain necessities at prices one can afford. As “Novel” points out women who have made life-long sacrifices to help husbands finance a home of their own are precluded in their declining years from the benefits pensioners can claim. In this International Women’s Year, women’s movements should stress these anomalous situations which apply to many wives and widows over 60 years of age. — Yours, etc., STILL STRUGGLING.
