Export of coal to Japan
Sir, — Could our politicians please explain why the Government is prepared to sell Mount Davy coal to Japan at $46 a ton when we have to import the same type of coal in the form of coke from Australia at $lO6 a ton? Admittedly our imports total only 4000 tons a year, but importing and exporting exactly the same resource seems illogical. Why do we not set up our own coking plant in New Zealand using Mount Davy coal? — Yours, etc., PERPLEXED. September 30, 1975.
