Old Boys well in squash lead
High School Old Boys II went into a commanding lead in the A grade squash rackets competition, taking maximum points against its other club side on Tuesday evening. It now leads Burnside by 10 points, but still has a bye to come.
it was surprising to see the number ol reserve players taking part—pernaps the school Holidays are taking their toil—and the over-ali standard of play uiu not impress. Points now aie:—
Men.—Higu Seuool Old Boys II 62, Burnsioe 52, Christchurch I 42. Christchurch H 38, Christchurch Hl 36, Sumner 24, High School Old Boys I 16.
Women.—High School Old Boys ( 100, Burnside i 4. Christchurch 68, Sumner 52, Suburbs 34. For the leading team, Barry McNeil could count himself lucky to have beaten Viv Hargreaves in straight games as Hargreaves made all the play and lost the first two games by a point after miscalculating the speed of a McNeil length drive.
Graeme Bird turned in another strong game to account for Ryan McCutcheon and the other two High School Old Boys II players, John Tolchard and Geoff Bianchi won comfortably in three games.
It was left to the SumnerChristchurch 111 match to provide Uie upsets of the night.
First John MacDougall outtallied the fit Laurie Wilson to win in four games and then Chris Van Uden, making his second inter-club appearance for the season, polished off an errorprone Jim Martin in three quick games.
With the Canterbury repre-| sentative, Lawrence Skurr, to' play Bruce Trangmar, Sumner to.oked set for a clean sweep, but Trangmar had other ideas. Aided by Skurris determination to play all his shots at the same speed. Trangmar raced to a two game lead and then in spite of Skurr taking the next tvo games with a little more v»*,ed play.
Trangmar hung on grimly to win the final game.
In the women’s matches Christchurch were too strong for Sumner, only Merle Holland managing a win for the seaside suburbs, beating Pip Monk in four games.
Burnside took full points from Suburbs although Lyn. Chamberlain took the first game from Kathy Graham and Jill Carpinter began very well against Saskia O'Brien winning the first two sets before Mrs O’Brien settled down to some sound basic squash.
