No surprises vet in table tennis

There were no untoward happenings tn the initial rounds of the open events at the New Zea land table tennis championships at Cowies Stadium vesterdav.

The world-ranked Frenchman. Jacques Secretin, the second seed, was only at half pace but still allowed his opponent onl\ 18 points in three games.

At the other end of the draw, the top seed and national champion. Richard I.ee (Auckland . won through in straight games as did the other six seeds in the men's singles.

It was a similar story in the women's singles. The eight seeds progressed to the third round without dropping any games. The national champion, and top seed Yvonne Fogarty (Auckland' after disappointing in the interassociations teams event, reproduced glimpses of the form that enabled her to win the title last year In beating the South Island representative. But while the first rounds of the open events were tree of surprises, there were a series of upsets in the junior, senior, and veteran championships which were all placed to the later stages.

The biggest shock occurred in the under 18 mixed doubles where the too seeds. Alistair Armstrong (Canterbury' and Angela Brackenridge (Auckland', lost in straight games to the unseeded Franklin pair. Graeme Clark and Linda Jekel. However, their moment of triumph was short-lived for thee departed in the next round to another unseeded pair. Lloyd Richards (Wellington! and Dianne Ord (Manawatu'.
