New school to be small
(By our education reporter)
The Department of Education favours a new type of organisation for the sl.sm secondary school which will open in Tuckers Road in 1978. The school, which will •erve Redwood, Northcote. and northern Bishopdale, will i be planned on the assumption that it will be a small school, catering for Form 111 to Form V. Senior forms will receivetheir education at Papanui l High School, and the new: Tuckers Road school will be a "feeder’ school for Papanui High School, thus ensur-; ing that the roll of the latter:
school is kept reasonably small.
The school will be built to -he department's S6B plan, which is similar to that used for the Kaiapoi High School. Previous proposals to use relocatable classrooms have been abandoned. The development of secondary education in the northern part of Christchurch may be affected, however, by possible plans for •he integration of St Bede's College into the State sector of education.
i Should the Roman CathoI lie education authorities jccept the Private Schools ■Conditional Integration Bill. I then the path would be clear for St Bede’s College, which is facing severe economic problems, to integrate with the State. Such a step would also allow St Bede’s to become a co-educational school.
