Legislation guaranteeing the public access to certain Government and other documents was likely to be introduced next vear. the Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay) said. The Minister, who was speaking at Auckland University. said it was intended to narrow the scope of the Official Secrets Act, and at the same time introduce positive legislation on the information to which the public had the right of free access. A Freedom of Information Bill, similar to legislation in Sweden and America, and recently passed in Australia, would be drawn up. Dr Finlay said he was waiting to study the Australian legislation to see how the Swedish concept had been adapted to Australian conditions.
