Northern polo team favoured
The North Island polo team, represented by players from the Central Districts area, will attempt to win the South Island open championship for the third successive year at Ryan’s Road at the week-end.
Although this northern team is not as tightly handicapped as previous ones, it has won two tournaments — at Amuri and Ashburton — since it arrived in the South Island shortly before Easter. The danger man in the Central Districts team is the No. 4, John Lane, Who holds a four-goal rating. He was a member of the Poverty Bay side which won the Savile) Cup last year The other team members,) Paddy Shearer (Wairarapa)J Joe Wedd (Hawke’s Bay) and; Bruce McKelvie (Rangitikei); are all assessed on a handicap of zero. I McKelvie is the son of one) of New Zealand’s best) players, John McKelvie. and! is the third member of the! family to make the southern! tour. I Honours have been shared among the South Island
clubs this season, but it is expected that either Ashburton — winner of the Gould Cup on seven consecutive occasions from 1966 to 1972 — or Amuri will contest the six-chukka final against Central Districts on Sunday afternoon. ;
Fifteen teams will participate in the three-day tournament. The finals are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
