EASTER OPEN

(By

BOB SCHUMACHER)

Wayne Adamson, the 19 - year - old Riccarton player, will be favoured to capture the only major Canterbury table tennis title to have eluded him so far — the Easter open — on Monday.

Adamson, the present Canterbury open and resident champion, was beaten in the final last year by Maurice Burrowes, and it is quite probable that they will meet again to decide the championship. In their inter-club clash, Adamson beat Burrowes easily in the third set, and the eighth-ranked New Zealand player should justify his top seeding. Burrowes played particularly well towards the end of the summer inter-club competition—he won 14 of his last 15 matches—and is certain to make a bold bid to retain his title. The redoubtable John Armstrong, winner of the Easter open on 12 previous occasions, is seeded third ahead of Yee Chow Boi. Both are to be respected for their powers of concentration and their reluctance to concede any points. There is only a small entry in the women’s singles, but it has attracted the leading Canterbury players. Barbara Taylor has won the title " r the last four years, but she will have to produce her best form to repulse the South Island champion, Jan Morris, and the Canterbury resident champion. Phillipa Marks. Burrowes and Adamson should have 'ittle difficulty in winning the men’s doubles for the third successive year. Their likely opponents in the final are Graeme Rhind and Mike Warren.

Gillian Marks and Yee are, I surprisingly, seeded ahead of | the Canterbury title-holders, [Phillipa Marks and Armstrong, in the mixed doubles.
