16 unbeaten in bowls

Sixteen teams were unbeaten after the first three section rounds yesterday in the Christchurch Bowling Centres Easter fours tournament.

A further 26 will go. into the fourth round this morning with two wins to their credit, and 3B. which had one win yesterday, face [the challenge of having to win all their five games today and tomorrow if they are to qualify. I For reasons other than] [simply because they were] ! the finalists last year. Les] I Lindley (Christchurch) and ] [Tom Dixon (South Brighton)[ [began as the favourites, but] [both slipped back with a [loss. Lindley has Peter Jolly] [and Fred Needham from his] winning team of last year ! playing for him. plus Maurice LeCren. who was his! 'lead when he won the event 1 i three years ago. Lindley was [beaten in the third round.! I 16-7 by Harold Fletcher! (Canterbury) ■ Dixon, whose team of' Graham Stanley. Peter Meier; and Don Heller is as it was,' last year, had an extreme a-, testing day. He won both his first two games by a singh i point — the second, against i Ted Bradshaw (Fendalton').] on an extra end — and then’ [in the third round he was; clearly beaten. 22-17. by] .'lvan Edyvean (Christchurch-] [Richmond M.S.A.). Dixon] never looked likely after] dropping a seven on the first end. Most of the other teams expected to get past the qualifying rounds finished the day with at least two wins, although there were two possible exceptions. Ted Trenberth, who has the same team with which he won the champion-of-champions fours earlier this month, had only the one win, as also did Bruce Sinclair (St Albans), who along] with his third, Jack Edmonds, has had a rewarding! season. Sinclair's defeats were at] the hands of Jack Gibb (Shirley) and Stan Cawtheray (Canterbury) and his win was over John Gill (Papanui), the runner-up two years ago; the scores in all three games were close.
