TURNER GOLF CAPTAIN
Des Turner (Russley), in his last appearance for Canterbury before i • r _ leaving . for a new position in England, will captain the provincial
golf team in its annual match against MidSouth Canterbury at Ashburton on March 23.
The former Australian and Auckland representative played for Canterbury in the last two Freyberg Rose Bowl tournaments. He won nine and halved one of his 14 matches.
Turner has been placed fifth in the 16-man Canterbury team behind his,four team-mates in the Freyberg side last year.
With Turner not available for the Freyberg team this year, there will be at least one vacancy, and three of the most likely candidates to replace him, Dennis Beggs,
Gary Urlwin, and Gary Maw, h , ave . beeri placed, in that pl^J ng orde u behind him These players’ results against Mid-South Canterburv will be of particular importance.
The juniors, Murray Brown (Waitikiri) and Simon Robinson (Christchurch), both of whom must warrant consideration before the Freyberg team is finally chosen, were not available. They will be representing New Zealand in the under-21 inter-state tournament in Hobart. The team, in playing order, is:—
