Rickets in England

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON.

Doctors have discovered an alarming number of cases of rickets among Asian children in the English city of Leicester. One school medical officer fears that between 5 and 10 per cent of the 8000 Asian schoolchildren in th t city may have the disease, which is caused by calcium and vitamin D deficiency.

The problem came to light after the discovery that many teen-age Asian girls were having abnormal difficulties with pregnancies. Rickets can lead to a deformation and even fracturing of the pelvis, making childbirth extremely painful. One reason why the problem has remained hidden is that school medical officers have had difficulty in examining Asian girls because of religious taboos on the removal of clothing.

Asian schoolchildren are prone to rickets because their diet, though adequate in other respects, is often deficient in calcium and vitamin D.
