Exciting floral display
An exciting display of a fantastic variety of flora is how the British High Commissioner to New Zealand (Sir David Scott) described the exhibition by combined garden clubs at the Horticultural Hall.
Two of Christchurch’s assets were its beautiful gardens and its fine facilities for presenting music, said Sir David when opening the exhibition yesterday. The exhibition is being presented in conjunction with the Christchurch Arts Festival. Sir David said Christchurch’s extraordinary variety and concentration of flowers and its music were brought nicely together for the festival.
The exhibition, convened by the immediate pastpresident of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, Mr S. W. Gower, includes displays
from 31 clubs. As suggested by Mr Gower, the displays feature either the history, industries, activities or local surroundings and landmarks of each club’s area. A few themes of an international nature are also included. All varieties of flowers, native flora and produce are featured in the displays. Several of the displays are enhanced by elaborately painted backdrops. St Martins-Opawa Garden Club with “Risingholme Community Centre” and the Avonside .Garden Club with “Spanish Courtyard” make excellent use of backdrops of paintings of, the wall of a
house around which they have arranged their displays. Upper Riccarton - Sockbum Garden Club uses a backdrop of a painting of the racecourse with the hills in the background for their display “Riccarton Racecourse anti Grand National.” All the displays show a great deal of originality and creativity. The exhibition is open for the next three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
