Sheep for Iran
Sir. — I am sorry to have annoyed “L.G.” by protesting against sending live sheep to Iran. I wonder if his annoyance is due to his conscience. If one’s main aim in life is to make money regardless of the rights of one’s more defenceless fellow creatures, one cannot afford a conscience. Perhaps freezing workers suffer from the same affliction when they leave stock to starve? I was unaware that it was necessary for animals to suffer that we might prosper, and since I came to this farm more than 30 years ago, no creature has suffered if I could prevent it. And it is not a choice between “dirty hands or empty bellies.” I may not be as wealthy as “L. G.” (or a freezing worker), but I still have three good meals a day and a very comfortable roof over my head. Surely greed and selfishness are repugnant whatever one’s walk in life. — Yours etc., E. A. BROWN. March 1, 1975.
