Rubbish collection

Sir, — Mr Hay promised an improvement in ruboish collections. Where is it? Having used our allocation of bags, we now pay 20c for a product worth 12c, or use the cheaper plastic, inadequate alternative. The fire ban means at least 50 per cent extra rubbish — another bag. Restrictions on compost mean that a fourth bag is needed for garden clippings. If you try to squeeze extra rubbish into a bag you can’t fasten the top and then the collectors do not take it. So we go back decades and to our own rubbish disposal. The 10-mile return trip to the tip costs $1.40 in car expenses and does nothing for fuel economy. The four bags at 80c, and admission to the tip at 30c to 40c brings the total to at least $2.50 a week on top of our rubbish rate. I gave Mr Hay and the Citizens my vote (which I am beginning to regret) hoping that something would be done. — Yours etc.,

CHRIS MORTEN. February 28, 1975.
