Alarming sunset
The fire alarm bells sounded at McMurdo Sta-
tion twice last week. But they puzzled practically everyone who rushed outdoors as there was no sign of smoke and no fire. The alarms sounded at about the same time on Friday
and Saturday nights from the United States Navy’s administration headquarters. Later investigation revealed that the culprit was the setting sun, the rays of which reflected off the water in Winter Quarters’ Bay to activate the heat sensors in the building’s conference room. Such an unusual incident has never happened before.
