Hops export prospect
(2V.Z. Press Association')
NELSON, Feb. 24.
New Zealand could develop an export market for the strains of hops now being developed at Riwaka, says the director of the D.S.I.R. hop research institute (Mr A. A. Frost).
Hops strains now being developed at Riwaka had a higher alpha resin content than was found in overseas hops, said Mr Frost. The higher resin content was the characteristic which brewers sought, and was also the basis on which growers were paid. United States experts had claimed that the resin consent could not be lifted above 16 per cent, but already one Riwaka strain was up to 15 per cent.
The average Nelson crop yielded about 7 to 9 per cent, but if this could be lifted the hops could be in demand overseas, he said. His predecessor, Dr R. Roborgh, had developed the seedless hop strain, and this had focused overseas attention on Riwaka.
