Historic buildings

Sir, — The comments of your correspondent, M. P. Owen, to those of Mr Cameron and mine about the ongoing use for Trinity Congregational Church are so disingenuous that one wonders why the proposals for its use as a restaurant are held in such high regard. Clearly any city foregoes “more economic” uses of certain of its amenities for the sake of aesthetics and cultural richness. If not, we would cover Cathedral Square with market stalls, or convert Hagley Park into a tastefully designed estate of townhouses. Trinity Church is a unique example of a building in a style that will never be repeated; to demean it with an unworthy use or I

extensive alterations would be a churlish act. — Yours, etc.. R. B. KEEY.
