HOLE IN RUNWAY
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 24. Wellington Airport was closed to Boeing flights today from 6.30 a.m. to 7.50 a.m. because of a hole in the main runway. Several flights were cancelled, and others changed, and N.A.C. staff were busy for some time afterwards dealing with the backlog of passengers. The Wellington City Council engineer (Mr D. A. Martin) said that the problem had developed from a hole dug during a recent investigation of cracks in the runway. Material round the hole had broken further. The works department planned to repair the hole, and others, tonight after the airport closed. Mr Martin said he hoped to present an interim report on cracks in the runway next week. He also hoped by that time to have a report from the D.S.I.R.
