COMALCO PROJECT
More talks in Aust. (N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, Feb. 24. The possibility of Comalco’s building an aluminium smelter at Gladstone, in Queensland, is to be discussed again this week, only hours before an option for electricity on the site must be taken up. Comalco has until Friday to exercise an option for power from the $200,000 powerhouse at Gladstone, and is understood to have had urgent discussions over the last week with Queensland Cabinet Ministers about the option. No official statements have been issued by Comalco, but it is understood that the company is seeking from the Queensland State Government concessions which would offer it protection if it were found that overseas markets could not support the smelter. Also at stake in the talks is a possible alumina refinery which Comalco may build somewhere in the South Pacific: the Philippines has been mentioned as a possible site for this. , Comalco has previously considered, and rejected, the idea of a smelter in Papua New Guinea. It has also dropped plans to refine bauxite at Weipa, where it mines bauxite, and, instead, is looking; at the Philippines project.
