Kaimai work delay
(N Z. Press Association)
TAURANGA, Feb. 24. Tunnelling the next 200 feet of the Kaimai tunnel on the Matamata side may well take from two to three months, because of extremely bad ground con-ditions—-the worst encountered on the west side, with the possible exception of the first 400 feet. The Ministry of Works resident engineer, Mr J. D. Bennion, said today: “There is obviously something ahead of us carrying a lot of water. The conditions have forced the tunnellers to abandon the three-stage tunnelling they have been doing, because when the top half of the tunnel is opened out, the ground is too soft to take the necessary supports. “It will take several weeks for the men to consolidate the section of the tunnel already mined, and then they will use a new system which,
while slow, is secure: small headings will be driven on each side of the tunnel at floor level, and concrete foundations laid, and then the tunnel can be gradually opened out from the top, using the concrete footings to hold the supports.”
